Health Kits are in Haiti!

Great news to share. The 32,000 Health Kits that campers lovingly put together are now in Haiti. Our Lutheran World Relief (LWR) partners are now working tirelessly to get them in the hands of the people who need them most. Given the current Cholera epidemic in Haiti, these kits could very well be instrumental in helping to keep people safe from this horrible disease.

Nebraska and Kansas youth campers assembled 32,000 health kits for people in need!

Campers of all ages gathered last summer from throughout Nebraska and Kansas, and took part in an unprecedented partnership to fill an entire ocean freight container with some 32,000 health kits to be distributed to families living in poverty. More than 1,500 youth joined hearts and hands in assembling the kits as part of the Created for Community Project, a partnership between Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries (NLOM) and Lutheran World Relief (LWR) .

Throughout the 2010 summer season at Carol Joy Holling Camp near Ashland, Neb., Sullivan Hills Camp, near Lodgepole, Neb., and Camp Tomah Shinga at Junction City, Kan., campers assembled health kits as they learned to put their faith into action in service to their global neighbors.

Once assembled, the health kits were transported to LWR's warehouse in New Windsor, Maryland, for final processing before being shipped overseas. The health kits are destined for Haiti as part of LWR's ongoing response to the January 12, 2010 earthquake that killed an estimated 230,000 and left millions homeless and in desperate need of help. Lutheran World Relief works with Lutherans and partners around the world to end poverty, injustice and human suffering.

"I'm delighted that LWR sought us out with the idea. LWR is a wonderful organization to partner with as they do so much good for so many hurting people around the world," said Dave Coker, Executive Director at NLOM. "And, I'm excited for the kids who came to camp last summer. The health kit service project will help them connect to their faith in powerful ways."
