How to make Friendos

Updated: Dec 18, 2020

Friendos (aka Friendship Bracelets) are a staple of camp. Not only are they given and received between both old and new friends—they usually require a friend to hold one end while you create the friendo. Here’s how you can create your own knotted friendo at home this summer (and if you don’t have a friend or sibling to hold the other end, a clipboard or tape works, too!).

For this example, you will need 4 pieces of string cut at 18” each. The order of our strings--left to right--is: dark red, green, pink, and blue.

Step 1: Tie one end of the strings together to create a knot.

Step 2: Starting with the left string (dark red), create a 4 over the neighboring string (green).

Step 3: Bring the tail of the (dark red) string underneath the (green) string.

Step 4: Hold the (green) string tight, and pull the (dark red) string tight. Repeat steps 2 – 4 to create a double knot.

Step 5: Using the same (dark red) string, create double knots (steps 2-4) on the remaining strings left to right (pink, then blue). Continue repeating these steps with the new furthest left string (green).

Step 6: Keep going until the bracelet is as long as you would like. When finished, gather the strings and tie a knot to secure the ends. Trim as needed.

Step 7: Share with a friend!
